Captain America: The First Avenger

Rent-it - Marvel comics has a third great superhero film of the year with this pleasantly nostalgic, good-ole-fashioned, action adventure film starring Chris Evans as the first Avenger.

Thor

Buy-it - Something about an Australian swinging a hammer just didn't strike me as "cool" superhero material, but Thor, like Iron Man, is comic-book movie gold, with the perfect mix of action and laughs, and brilliantly iconic direction by Kenneth Branagh. But boy do I feel bad for younger brother Liam Hemsworth who lost out to big brother Chris for the title role of a lifetime.

X-Men: First Class

Buy-it - The epic beginning of the mutant saga is just as diverse, stylish and powerful as the "superheroes" it's about. You'll leave wishing the Cold War had never ended. But it's the perfect summer blockbuster that will obviously have a sequel and will certainly make a handful of somewhat recognizable faces into Hollywood stars.

Green Lantern

Skip-it - If you don't know anything about the comic book superhero's mythology and need a completely adolescent explanation in an obnoxiously loud, visual-effect vomiting fashion, you might mildly enjoy this film. Otherwise, skip-it.

Super

Skip-it - Rainn Wilson's long-awaited dark comedy about superheroes (also starring Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, and Kevin Bacon) oddly combines absurd humor with extremely bloody violence - leaving most movie-goers confused, repulsed and uninterested. Go buy Kick-Ass instead.

Batman & Robin

Skip-it - It's hard to distinguish which of these last two awful Batman films is which - this is the one with Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and the worst Batman of all-time (George Clooney) and everyone's favorite sidekick Robin (Chris O'Donnell) - NOT!  

Batman Forever

Skip-it - Val Kilmer, Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Carrey star in this cartoonish, yet live-action version of Batman that is almost the worst ever, if it wasn't for...  Batman & Robin.

Batman

Buy-it - The Dark Knight was amazing, and as was Christian Bale and Heath Ledger, but this version of Batman from 1989 directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton as Batman (but more notably as the best Bruce Wayne ever), Jack Nicholson as the Joker, and Kim Basinger as Vicki Vale (Bruce Wayne's love interest) is still an incredible version of the dark knight saga and worth buying on Blu-ray!
